| The terms "upper case" and "lower case" come from the way printers (the people, not the machines) used to organize the typefaces that they used for their printing presses. The different metal letters used for printing were kept in cases so they could be located when needed. Capital letters were kept in cases on top; other letters were kept in cases on the bottom.
